Living in Creston Grand Rapids, Michigan



Welcome to Creston, one of the largest and arguably the most green neighborhood in the Grand Rapids area. We’re going to be looking at different schools in the area, some real estate stats, things to do, and a number of different items about Creston.

Creston Real Estate

49505 has been ranked one of the hottest zip codes in America by Realtor.com for many years. This neighborhood is still super affordable and homes are about 40% more affordable than the national average. Home prices range between $110,000 all the way up to about $615,000, so you have a range in both investments and well-established neighborhoods here.

Home prices average around $350,000, making it still an approachable neighborhood for first-time home buyers as well. Homes range in size from two to five beds and one to two baths. Though they’re primarily single-family homes throughout the neighborhood, you’ve got some multi-family homes and then some apartment complexes here as well. The majority of residents in the area own their homes and crime is 27% lower than the national average. So if you’re looking for a neighborhood that’s super safe and affordable, this is definitely a spot to consider.

Schools in Creston

Creston has some fantastic schools in the area for your kids. City High High School is ranked top both nationally and in the top 5% of schools in Michigan, so it’s got a phenomenal reputation. It’s right on Plainfield, and that’s grades 7 through 12. You also have a number of other Grand Rapids public schools, Montessori schools, some of the Northview schools, and then Riverside Garden School.

Transportation

Creston is super easy to get around. There is public transportation running throughout the neighborhood. You’re only five minutes from downtown, a quick drive up to Rockford, and nearby to many other neighborhoods as well. The walkability score is a little bit lower than other neighborhoods in the area, so note that it may be easier to have a bike or a car to get around over here. And there are also some amazing bike trails and bike paths that live throughout Creston, so it’s a super bike-friendly area.

Recreational Opportunities

There is a lot to do outside in Creston. There are a number of different parks to frequent. There’s Briggs Park, Huff Park, which has some amazing walking trails throughout the wetlands there, Aberdeen Park, which also has a number of different tennis courts and baseball diamonds, and the amazing Riverside Park, which is what Creston is also known for. Riverside Park is super expansive with so much to do from enjoying the green space itself, getting out on the river on your kayak or boat, or enjoying some disc golf. There are also some amazing bike trails that lead from Riverside Gardens up through the White Pine Trail that goes all the way up to Cadillac so it’s a great spot to get out, bike, and enjoy the outdoors.

Dining Options in Creston

The neighborhood is home to some of the area’s favorite restaurants, including Creston Brewery. Known for its awesome beers, but they have a great menu stacked with some amazing items. They also have an event space up top where they have had some comedy shows. The area also has Choo Choo Grill, a small burger joint, and Grand Rapids’ staple. Then there is Lucy’s Cafe on Plainfield, which is a favorite spot for brunch. They have some of the best mimosas and delicious breakfast options. Another newer addition to the area is Cafe Mamo, which is a small, really intimate, cute venue with amazing cocktails, a great wine list, and an amazing menu. There are plenty of spots to come eat and enjoy Creston. 

Business District

Creston also has a thriving business district that keeps growing every year, which is super exciting to see. They have an awesome bridal boutique called Renee Austin, amazing art galleries, massage parlors, barbershops, and another handful of local small businesses that really thrive in the area. Another local highlight is Kingma’s Market, which is one of the best local grocery stores in the area, and it was just recently ranked one of the top grocers in Michigan, so definitely check them out.

More Things to Do

Creston has one of the most engaging and involved community neighborhood associations. They hold a number of different events and have plenty of opportunities for you to get involved in the development of the neighborhood, whether on a committee or through the local events that they host. One that they do every spring is the annual pancake breakfast and town hall. And then throughout the summers, they have Food Truck Fridays in Riverside Park.
