Grand Rapids Brewery Map & Reviews: A Local Guide to Beer City USA

Updated 2026

Grand Rapids has been Beer City USA since 2012, when the city won a nationwide vote and officially announced something locals already knew: nobody in Michigan takes craft beer more seriously. Since then, the designation has held. USA Today named Grand Rapids America’s Best Beer City four years in a row from 2022 through 2025, and the city is in contention again in 2026. The Beer City Ale Trail covers 35+ breweries and taprooms in the city and surrounding communities (a count that shifts as the scene evolves), and TimeOut Magazine ranked it among America’s top food and drink trails in 2024.

For people moving to Grand Rapids or visiting for the first time, the brewery scene is one of the most talked-about parts of life here. This guide covers the breweries worth knowing, organized by area, with a focus on what makes each one worth your time rather than just a name and an address.

The Map!

For those just looking for a quick map of the area’s top breweries, here’s our updated version.

A note before we dive in: the brewery landscape shifts. A few places from an older version of this guide have closed, including Grand Rapids Brewing Company (which closed after a kitchen fire). We have updated this guide to reflect what is actually open and worth visiting in 2026. For the most current and complete picture, the Beer City Ale Trail maintained by Experience Grand Rapids is always the most up-to-date resource, and the free Beer City Brewsader app makes it easy to track your visits and earn rewards.

Downtown and Near-Downtown Grand Rapids

Founders Brewing Co.

235 Grandville Ave SW | foundersbrewing.com

The anchor of the Grand Rapids brewery scene and one of the most recognized craft breweries in the country. Founders launched in 1997 and nearly closed in 1999 before pivoting to bolder, more adventurous beers under the “Brewed for Us” philosophy. That pivot worked. Today Founders is the largest craft brewery in Grand Rapids and consistently ranks among the best breweries in the United States. The taproom is large, loud, and genuinely fun, with live music, a full kitchen, and a rotating tap list that rewards repeat visits. If you only visit one brewery in Grand Rapids, this is the one.

Brewery Vivant

925 Cherry St SE | breweryvivant.com

Brewery Vivant operates out of a beautifully restored 1894 funeral home in the East Hills neighborhood, making it one of the more visually striking taprooms in the Midwest. It is also the world’s first LEED-certified microbrewery, which tells you something about the owners’ attention to craft. Vivant specializes in Belgian-style ales, a more nuanced and sophisticated direction than many American craft breweries attempt, and pulls it off exceptionally well. The food is excellent, the atmosphere is warm, and the Big City Sour (featuring bourbon) has a following of its own. A consistent top-four finisher in Grand Rapids best-brewery rankings.

Mitten Brewing Company

527 Leonard St NW | mittenbrewing.com

The Mitten built its identity around baseball, Michigan, and great pizza, and it works. The original West Side location has since expanded to multiple spots around the city, and the food has become as much of a draw as the beer. The beer cheese is legitimately famous locally, and the Glutton sandwich has a cult following. Their beers are approachable and well-executed, making Mitten a solid choice for mixed groups where not everyone is a committed craft beer enthusiast.

City Built Brewing

820 Monroe Ave NW | citybuiltbrewing.com

One of the more distinctive breweries in the downtown area, City Built is a certified diverse business with a strong commitment to community and an equally strong commitment to quality beer. The taproom has a great energy, the rotating tap list keeps things interesting, and the food program is worth paying attention to. A good stop if you want to experience something that feels genuinely rooted in the neighborhood.

Kusterer Brauhaus

642 Bridge St NW | kustererbrauhaus.com

Kusterer brings a Bavarian beer hall experience to Grand Rapids, and it is executed with real commitment. David Ringler spent years studying German brewing traditions before opening this place, and the German-style lagers, hefeweizens, and märzens have earned international recognition. If you have been drinking IPAs all afternoon, the clean malt-forward character of a proper Bavarian-style beer is a genuinely refreshing pivot. The space accommodates large groups well, which makes it popular for company events and birthday parties.

The West Side and Bridge Street District

New Holland Brewing — The Knickerbocker

417 Bridge St NW | newhollandbrew.com

New Holland’s Holland location is the original, but for a downtown Grand Rapids brewery tour the Knickerbocker on Bridge Street is the more practical stop. It sits in the heart of the Bridge Street corridor, which makes it a natural anchor for the West Side cluster alongside Kusterer and Archival. The tap list pulls from New Holland’s full lineup, including Dragon’s Milk, one of the most recognized bourbon barrel stouts in the country. Worth including whether you are building a walking tour or just need a reliable stop after exploring the neighborhood.

Eastown, East Hills, and the Wealthy Street Corridor

Harmony Brewing Company

1551 Lake Dr SE | harmonybeer.com

Harmony has two locations and has built a loyal following on both sides of the city. The original Eastown taproom on Lake Drive is relaxed and community-oriented, with a strong food menu and a year-round tap list that leans toward balanced, food-friendly beers. If you are exploring Eastown as a neighborhood (and you should), Harmony is a natural stop that fits the area’s independent, walkable character.

Speciation Cellars

928 Wealthy St SE | speciationartisanales.com

Speciation is tucked in an alley off Wealthy Street, inside a 100-plus-year-old auto garage behind the Studio Z textiles building. It is easy to miss and deeply worth finding. The focus is wild and oak-aged ales, spontaneously fermented with ambient yeast, alongside a growing wine program under the Native Species Winery name. The result is a rotating lineup of sours, saisons, and wild ales that changes constantly and rarely disappoints. Free live music on Fridays, trivia on Wednesdays, and a bring-your-own-vinyl night on Tuesdays make it one of the more lively community-focused taprooms in the city despite its intimate size. The kitchen is currently closed, but food pop-ups are frequent and the surrounding blocks of Wealthy Street have plenty of options. A strong choice for anyone who has been everywhere else and wants something different.

South Division and Alger Heights

Arvon Brewing Co.

1006 Division Ave S | arvonbrewingco.com

Arvon built its reputation in distribution before opening its South Division taproom in a converted 1948 Oldsmobile dealership. The former showroom is now the taproom; the former service area houses the electric brewing system, which Arvon believes is one of the only ones of its scale in Grand Rapids. The beer leans toward New England-style IPAs and heavily fruited sours, executed with enough precision that Arvon has earned a place near the top of Michigan brewery rankings. Comfortable, well-lit space with Michigan oak and walnut touches throughout, family-friendly, and reliably busy on weekends. The South Division location fills a genuine gap in a corridor that had been underserved by craft beer.

Brass Ring Brewing

2404 Eastern Ave SE | brassringbrewing.com

Brass Ring sits in the Alger Heights business district and has become a neighborhood institution since opening in 2018. The specialty is English-style traditional ales, porters, and stouts brewed with British-sourced grains and served via hand-pulled cask. If you have been working through the IPA-dominant parts of the trail, Brass Ring is where the palate resets. The food program is legitimately good, and the outdoor beer shanties (inspired by ice fishing huts) are one of the more inventive taproom features anywhere in the city. Grand Rapids Magazine called it “the most rollicking fun you’ll find anywhere in town,” which is not far off.

North Side and Northern Suburbs

Greyline Brewing Co.

1727 Alpine Ave NW | greylinebrewing.com

Greyline is a neighborhood brewery on the north side of Grand Rapids, with sixteen taps, rotating food, live music, and Saturday trivia nights. It is not the kind of place that makes national top-ten lists, but it is genuinely good and has built a loyal local following. Worth knowing if you are exploring the north side of the city or looking for a lower-key alternative to the busier downtown stops.

Perrin Brewing Company

5910 Comstock Park Dr NW, Comstock Park | perrinbrewing.com

Perrin is one of the larger production breweries in the region, with a well-designed taproom and a broad range of year-round and seasonal offerings. It is a reliable choice for groups and for visitors who want a high-quality but approachable brewery experience without the downtown crowds.

Archival Brewing

6266 W River Dr NE | archivalbrewing.com

Archival has quickly become one of the most talked-about breweries in the city. The husband and wife team behind it spent years studying traditional and historic brewing styles, and the taproom reflects that care: a light-filled, airy space with a beer garden that becomes the best outdoor drinking spot in Grand Rapids on a fall evening with the firepits going. The food accommodates vegan, vegetarian, and meat-eating guests equally well, and the mead program is genuinely exceptional. Worth going out of your way for.

Southwest and Northwest Suburbs

TwoGuys Brewing

2356 Porter St SW, Wyoming | twoguysbrewing.com

TwoGuys is in Wyoming, about 15 minutes southwest of downtown Grand Rapids, and it earns the drive primarily on the strength of its food menu. Fungus Amongus (rotating mushroom preparations), Gas Station Nachos smothered in beer cheese and pickled jalapeños, and beer-battered white cheddar cheese curds have given TwoGuys a distinct food identity that most breweries do not bother to build. The beer selection is broad, covering enough styles to satisfy most groups, and the atmosphere is informal and family-friendly.

Lost Art Brewhouse

3393 Remembrance Rd NW, Walker | lostartbrewhouse.com

Lost Art is in Walker, northwest of Grand Rapids, and consistently earns strong rankings among Michigan breweries despite its off-the-beaten-path location. The beer quality is the draw here more than the atmosphere. Trivia on Wednesdays draws a regular crowd. Worth adding to a longer day on the trail if you are already heading north or west of the city.

Gravel Bottom Craft Brewery

418 Ada Dr, Ada | gravelbottom.com

Gravel Bottom is located in the Ada village area just east of Grand Rapids, and if you are exploring Ada as a potential neighborhood (or just spending time in the area), this is one of the best reasons to stop. The taproom has a relaxed, community feel, the beer quality is consistently high, and the home brewing supply shop attached to it reflects the serious craft culture behind the operation.

Cedar Springs Brewing Company

95 N Main St, Cedar Springs | csbrew.com

Cedar Springs is worth the short drive north of Grand Rapids. The taproom is genuinely welcoming, the beer is creative and well-executed, and the downtown Cedar Springs location gives the whole experience a small-town character that is hard to replicate in a bigger city setting.

Pigeon Hill Brewing Company

500 W Western Ave, Muskegon | pigeonhillbrew.com

Pigeon Hill is technically outside Grand Rapids, but it is worth mentioning because it is one of the best reasons to extend a day trip to Muskegon. The taproom is well-run, the beer is creative, and combining a visit to Pigeon Hill with Lake Michigan beach time is a genuinely great West Michigan afternoon.

New Holland Brewing Co.

66 E 8th St, Holland | newhollandbrew.com

New Holland is another brewery that lives outside Grand Rapids proper but belongs in any West Michigan brewery guide. Their Dragon’s Milk bourbon barrel stout is one of the most recognizable craft beers in Michigan, and the Holland taproom is a great stop when you are making the run to the lakeshore.

Odd Side in Grand Haven pairs naturally with a Lake Michigan beach day and a walk through downtown Grand Haven. Planning Your Grand Rapids Beer Tour

A few practical notes for anyone planning a serious brewery run through Grand Rapids:

The Beer City Ale Trail is the official resource for planning visits, tracking check-ins, and earning rewards through the Beer City Brewsader app. Download it before you visit. It covers breweries across the trail and is updated regularly as new spots open and others close. Find it at experiencegr.com.

Downtown walkability is real. Founders, City Built, and Kusterer are all within a short walk of each other in the downtown core, making them a natural starting cluster for a walking tour. The Knickerbocker and Archival are a short walk or Uber ride west along the Bridge Street corridor. Mitten on Leonard Street is another reasonable extension.

Neighborhoods matter. Part of what makes Grand Rapids’ brewery scene interesting is that each brewery reflects its neighborhood. Vivant feels like East Hills. Harmony and Speciation feel like Eastown and the Wealthy Street corridor. Kusterer and the Knickerbocker feel like the Bridge Street redevelopment energy. Brass Ring feels like Alger Heights. If you are exploring the city as a potential place to live, letting the breweries serve as neighborhood anchors is actually a decent way to get a feel for different parts of Grand Rapids.

Food at breweries is no longer an afterthought in Grand Rapids. Vivant, Mitten, Archival, Perrin, TwoGuys, Brass Ring, and several others operate full kitchens with menus worth sitting down for. City Built’s coastal-Mexican partnership with Los Mariscos de Pancho is one of the more distinctive food programs in the scene.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Grand Rapids called Beer City USA?

Grand Rapids won a nationwide online vote in 2012 to earn the Beer City USA designation. The title stuck because the city kept earning it: USA Today named Grand Rapids America’s Best Beer City in 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025. The city went from having no breweries in 1996 to over 35 craft breweries on the Beer City Ale Trail today, driven by a culture that genuinely cares about craft, community, and quality ingredients.

How many breweries are in Grand Rapids?

The Beer City Ale Trail covers 35+ breweries and taprooms in the Grand Rapids area, though the number shifts as new places open and others close or relocate. The broader West Michigan region, including Holland, Muskegon, and Grand Haven, adds many more options within a short drive. The Beer City Brewsader app maintains the current count.

What is the most famous brewery in Grand Rapids?

Founders Brewing Co. is the best-known Grand Rapids brewery nationally and internationally, consistently ranked among the top craft breweries in the United States. Brewery Vivant is frequently cited as the best overall taproom experience. Both are worth visiting.

What happened to Grand Rapids Brewing Company?

Grand Rapids Brewing Company, which operated at 1 Ionia Ave downtown, closed permanently after kitchen fire damage. It was one of the older names in the scene but is no longer operating.

Are Grand Rapids breweries good for non-beer drinkers?

Yes. Several Grand Rapids breweries have expanded well beyond beer. Speciation Cellars produces wine under its Native Species Winery label alongside its wild ales. Archival’s mead program is particularly well-regarded. Most taprooms also serve non-alcoholic options and have strong food menus, making them genuinely good destinations even for guests who are not primarily there for the beer.
