The History of Cascade Township

Cascade was initially platted in 1845. The township was originally a part of Ada Township and then was separated in 1848. Cascade quickly began to grow and in 1854, the first general store and post office were built. In 1890, a township hall was built and that original hall still stands as the Township Museum today. Cascade Township is located in the southeastern section of Kent County, just 10 miles southeast of Grand Rapids. This area is divided into east and west sections by the scenic Thornapple River. One of the largest attractions in this area is the Gerald R. Ford International Airport which lies in the southwest corner of this township. 

About Cascade, Michigan

The area’s demographics are 95% white, 3% Asian, and 1% African-American. In addition to that, a small Native American population as well. The median income for a household in the township is $87,000, and the median income for a family was $98,000 in the past year. There are just under 6,000 households, of which 39% had children under the age of 18 living with them, and 79% were married couples living together in the area, so again, a very family-focused neighborhood. Just under 20,000 people live in the Cascade area. Cascade is known for its spacious and affluent neighborhoods. The area covers a substantial land area offering a mix of both suburban and rural settings.

The median home sale price as of the last year has been $535,000. Over the past year, property sale prices ranged between $158,000 and $2.75 million. Cascade is mainly single-family properties and the majority of the residents own their homes here in this area. Most of Cascade is served by Forest Hills Public Schools. This district encompasses multiple elementary, middle, and high schools known for their academic excellence and their extracurricular activities. The southern portion of the township is served by Caledonia Schools, and then a small eastern portion of the district is served by Lowell Schools. 

Businesses in Cascade Township 

A portion of East 28th Street runs right through Cascade Township, which boasts some of these streets’ best shopping. Some of our favorites are A.K. Rikk’s, and Medawar Jewelers, and there are so many more. You’ll have plenty of grocers to choose from as well in the area, with Meijer, D&W, and Harvest Health Foods nearby. Some local dining favorites are the Thornapple Brewing Company, Cascade Roadhouse, and Noto’s Old World Italian, as well as The Gathering Place, which is a great spot to grab breakfast or brunch in the area. There are also plenty of opportunities to get outside and enjoy the outdoors. Outside of enjoying, relaxing, or fishing on Thornapple River, there are also wonderful parks nearby as well. Cascade Township Park is one of them. They have great walking trails, a Frisbee golf course, and an awesome dog park there. The area is also known for some amazing golf courses like Quail Ridge Golf Club and Thornapple Point. Finally, we can’t forget to mention a local favorite, Shaggy Pines Dog Park. It’s rated one of the top 10 dog parks in North America, which is a great place to run, wash, and play with your pets, so definitely check them out.
