Welcome to Lowell, Michigan, another stop on our tour, showing you all of the things in West Michigan. We’ll start with the location, Lowell is about 15 minutes east of Grand Rapids and very accessible by freeways. Lowell gives you that rural and suburban community.

Downtown Lowell, Michigan

There’s a lot of water that circulates in and right through the community of Lowell being on the banks of the Flat River, which connects with the Grand River. This community has a super cool historical vibe to it. It really has that small-town, USA feel. When you’re going down Main Street, there is some incredible shopping. Over the years, it has certainly become a little bit more of a destination, an eclectic community, and a lot of artistry.

There is the Flat River Grill, Main Street Barbecue, and plenty of other places to come and hang out. There’s the old-school hardware store, and post office, and you certainly feel like you’re walking back in time to just a really cool, historical village and street here in the city of Lowell itself.

Recreation and Parks

Moving onto some recreation in Lowell as this is such a beautiful area to be outdoors, including one of the best parks in Kent County, Fallasburg Park. There is the Fallasburg Covered Bridge, one of the oldest covered bridges in Michigan, constructed in 1872. We’re right on the banks of the Flat River and within the city limits, there are six additional parks. Lowell is also known for being the location of the Kent County Fairgrounds and the new and improved Kent County Youth Fair coming soon, so this is a really cool outdoor community. With the Flat River, there are so many opportunities for fishing, kayaking, boating, and all sorts of things that you can do here on the river. The Flat River then connects to the Grand River, which runs east and west just south of Lowell, providing endless recreational activities in this awesome community.

Lowell School District

Breaking down the Lowell School District, what we need to understand is Lowell schools cover a very large geographical area, stretching as far south down to Caledonia, south of 96, west over to Forest Hills, north way up to Rockford, and then east, into Saranac. There are four elementary schools spread out throughout the district, one middle school, and one high school. There is also an additional high school, which is Unity School, which caters to students that maybe have had a tough time transitioning through normal education in high school. It’s also important to note that the athletic programs, club programs, and facilities in the Lowell School District are very nice. There’s a student population of roughly 3,500 with roughly a 21 students to one teacher ratio, which is very low, compared to the rest of the schools around Kent County. Lowell is certainly a great school district and ranks very highly among other Kent County schools.

Real Estate in Lowell, Michigan

Let’s talk Lowell real estate. This is another community where you can literally have anything you want, but starting with the average price point in Lowell right now is roughly $398,000, compared to the average price point of Kent County is about 350,000, so it is a little bit higher than the county average. Talking about the styles of homes, obviously, with the historical district of Lowell, you can get older homes that were built in the late 1800s with a ton of character.

But since Lowell is a rural community, there’s also a lot of farmland. If you want acreage, space, and sprawling land, Lowell is certainly a great option for you. There are plenty of newer developments in Lowell, so there are plenty of new construction opportunities here. Then, with so much water with the Flat River and Grand River going through Lowell, there are rivers and lakes, including Murray Lake, which is one of the best all-sports lakes in Kent County. This means there are many opportunities to be on the water in Lowell.
